BUY A CARD | FEED A CHILD™

Together We’re Taking the “Bite” Out of Hunger!

Thanks to your greeting card purchases this year, Legacy is coming close to doubling last year’s total meals donated already!

Through the first half of 2014, your purchases have allowed Legacy to donate the equivalent of over 286,000 meals from our greeting card profits. Since we began our BUY A CARD | FEED A CHILD program in January, 2014 we have donated the equivalent of over 650,000 meals to hungry children and families in the United States, Canada and countries around the world where hunger, malnutrition and starvation are a daily threat.

Did you know that more than 15,000 children around the world die each day from the effects of starvation and malnutrition?  Over 55 million children across the globe suffer from the debilitating impact ofacute malnutrition, a medical term that essentially means the body begins feeding on itself because it lacks proper nutrition to survive otherwise.  And in the United States, 20% of all children live in food insecure households, meaning they do not get the proper nutrition they need or adequate meals on a daily basis to succeed at school, in sports or in other activities.

As you may know, Legacy is a family-owned business (started by our patriarch, Dave Dunn and his wife Mary, and passed on to his three daughters, Mary Pat, Pam and Cathy and their husbands, Pete, Tim and Carlos).  You've seen our kids on the cover of our catalog, year after year.  You may have even met them at a trade show.  Families and children have always been central to who we are as a company and as individuals.  In fact, all three sisters were once teachers, and all three husbands have served their country proudly in the U.S. Army.  We believe we all have an obligation to make this world a better place, not just for our families, but families everywhere.

That is why we launched our BUY A CARD | FEED A CHILDTM card line in 2013.  Every full-color card (SRP $2.99 or higher) you purchase from Legacy will help feed hungry children and families in the United States and around the world.  Each month, Legacy donates a portion of the profits from each card to a different hunger relief organization that is committed to eradicating the deadly scourge of hunger and malnutrition from the face of the earth.  We believe this goal can be accomplished in our lifetime with your help.

No child should have to go hungry.  No family should be without enough to eat on a regular basis.  It isn't just about selling greeting cards for us.  It's about saving lives.  You can help make a difference in a child's life.  Won't you join us in the fight?

Want to know how we are doing in our efforts to end hunger?  Check back here monthly to see the organizations we are supporting and the equivalent number of meals we have provided (derived by dividing our donation by the cost per meal as provided by the recipient organization).  Legacy donated over 350,000 meals in our first year and the number keeps growing!

2014 Donations

This month’s donation

Thanks to your purchases of greeting cards during the month of August, Legacy was able to donate the equivalent of 16,324 meals to the United Nations World Food Program-USA (www.wfpusa.org).  For over 50 years, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has worked in collaboration with governments to provide school meals to children around the world. Last year alone, WFP delivered school meals or take-home rations to 18.6 million children.

School meals are the right equation to help solve global hunger. For children who have to walk miles to get to school, a meal can give them the energy to focus on their studies. When families don’t have enough food to go around, a school meal can be the motivation to send children to school. In places where poverty and inequality mean that girls often don’t receive an education, a school meal can give families a reason to send their daughters to school. School meals have the power to break the cycle of poverty and give children a chance at a brighter future.  The World Food Program-USA is an accredited charity with the Better Business Bureau and has received a Three-Star Rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator.

January            95,301  meals provided

Legacy chose Food for the Poor (www.foodforthepoor.org) as our recipient organization for the month of January.  Thanks to your greeting card purchases in the month of January, Legacy was able to provide a donation in an amount equivalent to 95,301 meals (based on cost-of-meal information provided by the recipient) to Food For The Poor (“FFTP”) to help end the terrible food crisis in Haiti that has put thousands of Haitian children and families on the brink of starvation.  The food crisis is the result of terrible tropical storms and mudslides that devastated crops in Haiti last year, along with a prolonged drought resulting in several poor harvests in a country that already has a fragile food supply.  Food for the Poor is one of the most efficient international relief organizations in the world, having received a 5-Star Financial Efficiency rating, from the independent rating agency Ministry Watch, the highest possible score, based on the latest information from 2010. FFTP is among the upper echelon for cost-efficiency within the MinistryWatch.com database, where it ranks 10th out of 341 ministries.

February            66,479 meals provided

Legacy chose the Americans Helping Americans program of Feed The Children (www.feedthechildren.org) as our February donation recipient.  Thanks to your greeting card purchases in February, enhanced by generous donations from several corporate partners of Feed The Children, Legacy’s donation was equivalent to  66,479 meals (based on cost of meals information provided by the recipient).  Founded in 1979, Feed The Children is one of the largest international charities based in the U.S. With the mission of providing hope and resources for those without life’s essentials, Feed The Children is a BBB Wise Giving Alliance accredited charity and uses a comprehensive and integrated program to combat hunger and poverty. Feed The Children addresses four basic needs: food and nutrition, water and sanitation, education and health, and community development.  Through its Americans Helping Americans program, Feed The Children and its partners are moving semi tractor-trailers loaded with 25-pound boxes of food, more than 10-pounds of essentials and personal care items, and Avon products from coast to coast in order to provide our neighbors with help and hope. Each of the semis holds enough food and essentials to help 400 families for up to a week.

March            16,657 meals provided

Legacy has chosen Kids Against Hunger (www.kidsagainsthunger.org) as our March donation recipient.  Thanks to your greeting card purchases in March Legacy was able to donate the equivalent of 16,657 meals (based on cost of meals information provided by the recipient) to Kids Against Hunger.  The mission of Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization, is to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in North America and to feed starving children throughout the world. Kids Against Hunger is not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious group and does not discriminate on any basis when distributing its meals.

The organization’s approach to achieving its goal – the eradication of world hunger – includes the packaging of a highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified soy-rice casserole by volunteers at numerous locations within the USA and Canada, and the distribution of those meals to starving children and their families in over 60 countries through partnerships with humanitarian organizations worldwide. Last year alone, volunteers at Kids Against Hunger’s food packaging centers across the North America packaged forty million meals for children and their families around the world and around the corner.

April            15,373 meals provided

Legacy has selected Be Like Brit (www.BeLikeBrit.org) as our recipient organization for the month of April.  Thanks to your greeting card purchases in the month of April, Legacy was able to provide a donation to Be Like Brit in an amount equivalent to  15,373 meals (based on cost-of-meal information provided by the recipient).   Be Like Brit’s mission is to serve the children of Haiti by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where they can grow, learn and thrive.  Young American Britney Gengel died in the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that took an estimated 230,000 lives in the small, poverty stricken country.  In her honor, the Gengel family founded the Be Like Brit orphanage in Grand Goâve, Haiti, based on the belief that every child has inherent dignity and worth and deserves to lead a happy life, full of love and understanding. Be Like Brit believes a strong faith, a nurturing atmosphere, proper nutrition, clothing, education, and hygiene along with age specific programming will provide the best environment for these children to grow and learn.  Be Like Brit develops an individualized life plan, tailored to each child’s unique needs, in order to promote the most healthy development and growth of these beautiful children.

May            87,430 meals provided

Through your purchases of Legacy greeting cards during the month of May Legacy was able to donate the equivalent of 87,430 therapeutic meals (based on cost-of-meal information provided by the recipient) to starving and severely malnourished children through the  International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org). The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.  At work today in over 40 countries and in 22 U.S. cities, the IRC restores safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. In the midst of a food crisis, starving children need immediate nutrition to save their lives. The IRC provides these children with therapeutic foods like Plumpy’nut, a vitamin-packed, protein-rich paste that requires neither preparation nor medical supervision. It’s easy to distribute, tastes good to children and — most importantly — gives them a quick start on their way back to full health.  The International Rescue Committee has been given a 4-Star Rating (the highest possible rating) by Charity Navigator, a leading, independent charity evaluator, and has been given an A rating by the American Institute of Philanthropy, its highest possible rating.

June            6,053 meals provided

Through your purchases of Legacy greeting cards during the month of June, Legacy was able to donate the equivalent of 6,053 meals (based on cost-of-meal information provided by the recipient) to Kylee’s Kare Kits for Kidz (www.kyleeskarekitsforkidz.org), an organization dedicated to providing nutritious food to children living in food insecure households in the Leominster, MA area (Leominster borders Legacy’s hometown of Clinton).
Kylee McCumber is a sixth grader at Sky View Middle School in Leominster, MA.  Kylee began to notice how many children in her school relied on the breakfasts and lunches provided by the school as their primary source of nutrition and sustenance.  In September of 2012, at the age of ten, she started Kylee's Kare Kits for Kidz, Inc. to help children in the Leominster community who do not have enough food at home on the weekends.  According to recent U.S. Department of Agriculture studies, over 49 million Americans live in food insecure households.  Of that number, 16 million are children under the age of eighteen.
Kylee’s original goal was to be able to provide food for 10 children each week. With the support of family, friends and her community, Kylee and her team are now providing food to 150 children on a weekly basis.
Kylee’s Kare Kits for Kidz now provides food every weekend for children throughout the Leominster public school system.  Each Friday the children receive a “Kare Kit” that includes such items as cereal, juice, fruit cups, applesauce, pudding, macaroni & cheese, chicken noodle soup, pasta products, granola bars, fruit snacks, and peanut butter crackers.  The contents of the Kare Kits vary week to week depending upon what the organization can purchase on sale or what may have been donated that week.
