Did you know that more than 15,000 children around the world die each day from the effects of starvation and malnutrition?  Over 55 million children across the globe suffer from the debilitating impact of acute malnutrition, a medical term that essentially means the body begins feeding on itself because it lacks proper nutrition to survive otherwise.  And in the United States, 20% of all children live in food insecure households, meaning they do not get the proper nutrition they need or adequate meals on a daily basis to succeed at school, in sports or in other activities.

As you may know, Legacy is a family-owned business (started by our patriarch, Dave Dunn and his wife Mary, and passed on to his three daughters, Mary Pat, Pam and Cathy and their husbands, Pete, Tim and Carlos).  You've seen our kids on the cover of our catalog, year after year.  You may have even met them at a trade show.  Families and children have always been central to who we are as a company and as individuals.  In fact, all three sisters were once teachers, and all three husbands have served their country proudly in the U.S. Army.  We believe we all have an obligation to make this world a better place, not just for our families, but families everywhere.

That is why we are so excited to announce the launch of our BUY A CARD | FEED A CHILDTM card line.  Every full-color card (SRP $2.99) you purchase from Legacy will now help feed hungry children and families in the United States and around the world.  Legacy will donate a portion of the profits from each card to different hunger relief organizations each month that are committed to eradicating the deadly scourge of hunger and malnutrition from the face of the earth.  We believe this goal can be accomplished in our lifetime with your help.

No child should have to go hungry.  No family should be without enough to eat on a regular basis.  It isn't just about selling greeting cards for us.  It's about saving lives.  You can help make a difference in a child's life.  Won't you join us in the fight?

Want to know how we are doing in our efforts to end hunger?  Check back here monthly to see the organizations we are supporting and the equivalent number of meals we have provided (derived by dividing our donation by the cost per meal as provided by the recipient organization).  Our goal is to provide 750,000 meals in our first year.

MARCH, 2013                                                                             15,960 Meals Provided

Legacy has selected Be Like Brit (www.BeLikeBrit.org) as our recipient organization for the month of March.  Thanks to your greeting card purchases in the month of March, Legacy was able to provide a donation to Be Like Brit in an amount equivalent to  15,960 meals (based on cost-of-meal information provided by the recipient).   Be Like Brit's mission is to serve the children of Haiti by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where they can grow, learn and thrive.  Young Britney Gengel arrived in Haiti in January, 2010 just a day before a catastrophic earthquake that claimed an estimated 230,000 lives rocked the small, poverty stricken country. Britney had spent the day visiting a Haitian orphanage where she and fellow students from Lynn University, on a Journey of Hope, met the small Haitian orphans they had traveled so far to help. Just a few hours later, Britney, three of her fellow students and two Lynn professors were dead, crushed in the rubble of their hotel. Britney was just 19.  But Britney's dream did not die with her. Shortly before the earthquake, she sent the following text message to her family: "They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself."  In her honor, the Gengel family founded the Be Like Brit orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti, based on the belief that every child has inherent dignity and worth and deserves to lead a happy life, full of love and understanding. Be Like Brit believes a strong faith, a nurturing atmosphere, proper nutrition, clothing, education, and hygiene along with age specific programming will provide the best environment for these children to grow and learn.  Be Like Brit develops an individualized life plan, tailored to each child's unique needs, in order to promote the most healthy development and growth of these beautiful children.
